This week, leading up to Thursday’s NFL Draft, veteran NFL scout Greg Gabriel will break down the top four quarterbacks in the first round. The Buffalo Bills are likely in the market for a signal caller, and may wind up with one of these top prospects.
Baker Mayfield – QB – Oklahoma
Size –6′ 5/8″ – 220 lbs – 4.84 40 yard dash (verifield)
Strong Points –As strong a competitor as you will find at the QB position the last few years. Has an extremely quick release to go along with a tight overhand delivery. Spins the ball well with good to real good overall arm strength. Very accurate and can make all the throws. Throws well on the run. Consistently throws a tight ball. Has a quick set up and very quick feet. Very good feel for pass rushers, can move around in the pocket, keep plays alive with his feet. Has top instincts. Strong leader on the field. Makes plays on a consistent basis. Three+ year starter with excellent production.
Weak Points –Height. Has a chip on his shoulder and can show some immaturity at times with his reactions to some things. Seldom plays from under center.
Summation –Baker is a fifth year senior who began his career at Texas Tech where he started as a walk-on his true freshman. After putting up huge numbers, Texas Tech still didn’t give him a scholarship so he transferred to Oklahoma where he had to sit out 2014. Has been a starter the last three seasons and put up huge numbers. Threw for over 14,000 yards during his career and 131 TD’s going through this year’s Bowl season. Only thing he really lacks is ideal height. Will be the wildcard of this draft. If he was 6’2 he would easily be the first pick in the Draft. Can be compared to Drew Brees but he is a little taller and much heavier and stronger than Brees was coming out of Purdue. Has a little Brett Favre to him also. An interesting guy who should evolve into a winning NFL quarterback.
