Lift

Congratulations to Kevin Tway (he’s a frequent reader of this column–not really) on his first PGA Tour victory last week at the Safeway Open. He won a playoff, besting Brandt Snedeker and Ryan Moore to win. Many were pointing at Sneds’ failure to close the deal in the final round, which is true. His 74 was shocking for a 9 time winner on Tour. But give Tway credit for recognizing the opportunity down the stretch, birdieing the final 2 holes to make the playoff. He then made 3 straight birdies in the playoff to win.

Tway seemed numb after the win when he spoke to Roger Maltbie of NBC and Golf Channel.

Is fall golf the best golf? Many in the golf industry in WNY will tell you so. I’m not sure it beats a perfect summer day, but I do like it better than spring golf here. Sure, we’re all excited about getting back on the course in the spring, trying the new equipment, and the promise of a great tournament season. But the fall brings beautiful scenery with the foliage, lush green fairways, and fewer folks competing for tee times.

Fall golf also gives us a chance to wear all of those great pullovers in the closet (I embarrassed to disclose how many 1/4 zips I own), and wear pants comfortably on the course. Add in the excitement of sneaking out to play when the weather is surprisingly great (like we’ve had the last few days), and you have a great set up. The only real pressure is beating sunset during the afterwork 9.

So, it may not be the best, but it’s damn close.

PlaceĀ

-Since I mentioned fall golf, here are some places to capture a round and the prettiest scenery of the year:

Springville CC–Private course, so scour your Facebook friends for a member to get out there.

Peak n Peek -It’s a decent drive (1hr 40min), but worth it! The Upper Course is gorgeous year round and fun to play, but with the fall colors it’s dynamite!

Holiday Valley – It’s not my favorite track (although I haven’t played it in a long time), but the ski resort is pretty and Ellicottville offers great post round vibe.

Elkedale CC-Tucked just outside of Salamanca, I played there for the first time in June. I truly enjoyed it, and it’s carved out in the valley of the Southern Tier Hills. You can imagine the scenery now.

Gowanda CC-A place I need to get back to soon. It’s one of the most underrated tracks in the area.

-Keep playing golf despite all that is happening in the fall. Back to school means the clubs go away for too many. Keep them out and find time to play 9. One of the best times in the fall to play is during a Bills game. Bring a radio (they do still exist) with you or stream the game to stay with your team and your game.
