Lifetime Opportunity for Beutel
Feature Photo credit Geoff Schneider It was a tough decision for Nate Beutel, and an easy one at the same time. Last May, Beutel was hired as assistant coach and basketball operations director under new Buffalo women’s head coach Kristen Sharkey. After 13 glorious seasons at SUNY Niagara (former NCCC), Nate was ready for a fresh challenge. Joining UB, a Division I program in full rebuild, seemed ideal. A tireless recruiter, he dove right in, hitting the road, searching out pl

ECC football on the rise
Early in 2021, Mike Kemp was in a coaching limbo. He was the part-time, interim head football coach at Erie Community College. A year into Covid, however, Kemp wasn’t certain that ECC football would survive the pandemic. The 2020 season had been canceled because of Covid.. Many of the ECC coaches had been laid off. The budget had been cut. Most of the players had scattered, uncertain where the football program was headed. “I wasn’t sure the program was going to continue,” K

Remembering Gerry Meehan
By Budd Bailey The date was October 6, 1986, a Monday morning. I was reporting for my first day at work in the public relations department of the Buffalo Sabres. I thought I was simply walking through the side door at Memorial Auditorium, but in reality, I was walking through the gates of hockey hell. I’ve been thinking about that day and the ones that followed since I heard about the death of former Sabres’ executive Gerry Meehan on Saturday. I discovered I was arriving just

TONY’S TAKE – THOUGHTS ON THE 2025-26 BUFFALO SABRES AND THE STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

Bandits peak at the right time
By Budd Bailey Some of the Buffalo Bandits are feeling a little sentimental these days. Yes, the team is preparing for the playoffs. It won its seventh straight game on Saturday night, a 12-6 triumph over the Rochester Knighthawks before 19,070 at the KeyBank Center. The Bandits will be playing someone in the postseason in two weeks, but they don’t know where and they don’t know when. But they do know that this core group of players, who has won three straight titles together

A look back and ahead at local hoops
There were plenty of good seats available at some local college basketball games this season. By Budd Bailey It’s a good time to examine the just completed local men’s basketball season. While the NCAA tournament is about to take over the spotlight nationally – including six games right here in Buffalo - there’s still time to poke at the year closer to home. It wasn’t a particularly encouraging season in most ways. Canisius showed a little life this season going 10-21, 5-15

Bandits make it three in a row
By Budd Bailey Sometimes it helps when your best players are your best players. Take the Buffalo Bandits, for example. “The Dhane and Josh Show,” sometimes associated with a talk show shown on YouTube, were in Oscar-winning form on the field Friday night as the Bandits defeated the Colorado Mammoth 13-10 before a sellout crowd in the KeyBank Center. Dhane Smith and Josh Byrne both had four goals and five assists for nine points, and were the dominant players on the field. It

Return to Daemen was step in the right direction for Hamburg's Ben Bill
Around the local basketball community, people figured Benjamin Bill wouldn’t be back at Daemen this year.. Bill was the reigning East Coast Conference player of the year. In the NIL era of college sports, with the money flowing, surely some Division I school would lure away a marvelously skilled 6-10 center. Head coach Mike MacDonald understood the realities. Last March 19, three days after the Wildcats lost to Aquinas in the DII regionals, MacDonald took his team out for chi
